Mass Education and Mass Media Do The Same Thing, But Differently

Speaking with a colleague whose husband had, what we plebeians (commoners) would call, an aristocratic title, noted, “He was bred to believe he was superior.” From his perspective what we might call arrogant is simply how reality is. When one’s republic dumbs-down into an Oligarchy, as former President Jimmy Carter describes has taken place in the United States, all the underlying assumptions regarding democracy, the rules and morality that govern society we are taught in school are off. We are witnessing what Chris Hedges, John Taylor gatto and Noam Chomsky call class warfare, a very old story indeed.

They could have stopped the Holocaust but didn’t…

As with most of the world I have been watching with amazement recent events, unprecedented in our history. We live in perhaps the most critical generation of all time. Our fate and the fate of every living thing rests in our hands. We are responsible, not the corrupt politicians and their corporate cronies who are placing bets using our name and our resources.

Years ago I was walking in front of the Ann Frank House in the Netherlands with a Dutch friend who kept saying ‘before the war,’ or ‘after the war.’ When I asked what that meant he explained that deep inside everyone who lived through the Nazi occupation was ashamed because together they could have prevented the holocaust, but did not. Fascism wrapped in the American flag is still Fascism.

How Could This (not) Happen?

Media has a major role to play in the mediation of consciousness, the mediation of reality.

Politics is Theater

Culture is a meta-ego created and sustained by the same source, fear and conflict, which spawned our personal ego. This meta-ego suffers from the same dis-eases; comparison, jealously, revenge, self-centered aggression, depression, pride, humiliation and all the rest. Culture is a group mind and that mind was created and shaped by the same egotistical fearful selfishness that defines our individual images of self. When that image is not – neither is the disease.
